Briana Aldama
Roger Winfield Morse Memorial Scholarship
Briana will complete her Community Health degree in 2021. She is a scholar in the Mannie L. Jackson Illinois Academic Enrichment and Leadership Program and has volunteered with Crisis Nursery, Reflections Memory Care, and Illini Fighting Hunger. An Edmund J. James Scholar, Briana is active in the Pre-Occupational Therapy Club.
Monica Astorga
Aurelio E. "Joe" Florio Scholarship
Monica graduates with a Community Health degree in May and will stay on to complete a master’s degree in Public Health. A Dean’s List honoree, she was a member of McKinley Health Center’s Special Populations Student Health Concerns Committee. She also traveled to the Dominican Republic with Global Medical Training, an international humanitarian organization.
Allyson Box
Benjamin H. Massey Memorial Award
Allyson graduates in May with a master’s degree in Kinesiology. She will stay on for doctoral studies in Neuroscience. Working with Dr. Steve Petruzzello, Allyson conducts research on psychophysiological approaches to the exercise stress response in order to determine how individual differences influence exercise stress reactivity and recovery.
Sarah Brennan
Beulah Drom Scholarship
Sarah will attend Rush University’s doctoral program in Occupational Therapy after completing her Kinesiology degree in May. She was an undergraduate research assistant in the Exercise Neuroscience Research Lab and has been active with the organization Swimmable and La Rabida Children’s Hospital in Chicago. In 2018, she was named a Student Laureate by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois.
Jonathan Briick
Seward C. Staley Scholarship
Jonathan will complete his Kinesiology degree in 2021 and plans to become a high school physical education teacher. He has nearly 15 years of service as an active duty Marine and will be commissioned as an officer after completing his degree. He has worked with youth through the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Camp Pendleton Youth Sports, and Young Marines of Cincinnati.
Nicholas Carlson
MidAmerica Healthcare Executives Recognition Award
Nicholas completes a Community Health degree in May and will go on to a position as an analyst for CVS Health. He completed a human resources internship at Carle Foundation Hospital and an analyst internship at R1 RCM. In 2018, he was a member of the winning team in the Claro Healthcare Case Competition and received the Roger Winfield Morse Memorial Scholarship.
Katherine Castillo
Agnes Radich Vidovic Award
Katherine will complete her Community Health degree in December and plans to go on to a graduate Physician Assistant program. A certified nursing assistant, Katherine works as a personal assistant to a student with a physical disability and is a life enrichment intern in the assisted living facility of Clark-Lindsey Village. A Dean’s List honoree, she previously received a President’s Award Program Scholarship.
Jason Cohen
Laura J. Huelster Award
After completing his PhD in Kinesiology in May, Jason will go on to a post-doctoral research position in the Public Health Sciences Division at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Mentored by Dr. Sean Mullen, his research explores how behavioral interventions rooted in physical activity, exercise, and relaxation relate to changes in psychosocial, affective, and functional improvements among cancer survivors.
Mia Corazzi
Carita Robertson Physical Education Scholarship
After graduating in May with a Kinesiology degree, Mia will enroll in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Northwestern University. She assisted with physical therapy in the Division of Disability Resources and Educational Services and was a research assistant with the FIT Kids project. Mia was a Dean’s List honoree and Edmund J. James Scholar.
Casey Cushing
Joanne M. Carraway and Charles M. Carraway Scholarship
Casey will pursue graduate education in Occupational Therapy after completing her Kinesiology degree in 2021. She works with Dr. Kevin Richards as an undergraduate research assistant in the Pedagogical Qualitative Research Lab and is an aquatic therapist for students with disabilities. A Dean’s List honoree and Edmund J. James Scholar, she received the 2018 Marianna Trekell Scholarship.
Yuliya Drab
Carita Robertson Physical Education for Women Scholarship
Yuliya will pursue a second bachelor’s degree in Nursing after completing her Kinesiology degree in December and plans to pursue doctoral studies in Nursing Practice. She is a research assistant in Dr. Sean Mullen’s Exercise, Technology, and Cognition Lab and has volunteered with the University of Chicago Medicine’s Center for Care and Discovery and Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine.
Svyatoslav Dvoretskiy
T.K. Cureton Physical Fitness Research Award
Slav will complete his PhD in Kinesiology next year. His research focuses on stem cell response to exercise. He has been teaching the laboratory-discussion section of the undergraduate course on the bioscience of human movement for four years and is the head teaching assistant for the course. He received a National Institutes of Health T32 Microenvironment Fellowship and an American College of Sports Medicine NASA Space Physiology grant.
Carly Frerichs
Carol L. Chittenden Scholarship
After completing her Kinesiology degree next year, Carly plans to pursue a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. She is an undergraduate research assistant in Dr. Jake Sosnoff’s Motor Control Research Lab and also trains new employees for University of Illinois Administrative Information Technology Services. A Dean’s List honoree and Edmund J. James Scholar, Carly is president of the Pre-Physical Therapy Club.
Kristin Godlin
Howard S. Hoyman Student Award
Kristin will complete her PhD in Community Health in 2022. Working with Dr. Robyn Gobin, she is investigating how various forms of religious coping impact health outcomes and is currently focused on post-traumatic growth in female survivors of domestic violence. Kristin is a chaplain at both Carle Foundation Hospital and OSF Heart of Mary Medical Center.

Joanne M. Carraway and Charles M. Carraway Scholarship
A Dean’s List honoree and Edmund J. James Scholar, Caroline completes her degree in Community Health this year. She plans to work on health policy before pursuing a master’s degree in that field. She was a research assistant in Dr. Naiman Khan’s Body Composition and Nutritional Neuroscience Lab and served a research and policy internship at the National Center for Health Research.

Ralph Geeseman Scholarship for Veterans
Jack will pursue a master’s degree in Healthcare Administration after completing his Community Health degree next year. He was an intern with the Health Information Management Department of Carle Foundation Hospital. A member of the Army ROTC and an Edmund J. James Scholar, Jack previously received the Carol L. Chittenden Scholarship and the Military Order of World Wars Award of Merit.
Abigail Hunter
Joanne M. Carraway and Charles M. Carraway Scholarship
Abby will complete her degree in Community Health in 2021. She is a risk management instructor for CPR, automated external defibrillators, and first aid on campus and assisted with the development of the Fall 2019 curriculum for safety audits and presentations. An Edmund J. James Scholar, Abby is a member of Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society and a Newman Hall Ambassador.
Morgan Johannes
Helga M. Deutsch Scholarship
Morgan plans to become a physician assistant after completing her Kinesiology degree next year. She works as a medical administrator at CampusTown Urgent Care and is a certified nursing assistant with Homewatch CareGivers. A Dean’s List honoree and member of Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, Morgan received the 2017 Seward C. Staley Scholarship.
Darius Jones
Reginald J. Alston Award for Excellence
Darius will pursue a career in Occupational Therapy after completing his Community Health degree in 2021. He volunteered with Children’s Hunger Fund from his sophomore year in high school to the program’s recent closure in his home town of Hazel Crest. As a personal assistant with Beckwith Residential Support Services, Darius helps students with disabilities to perform the tasks of daily living.

Marianna Trekell Scholarship
Jamie will complete her Kinesiology degree in 2022. She is a research assistant in Dr. Kevin Richards’ Pedagogicial Qualitative Research Lab and volunteers at Carle Foundation Hospital. A Dean’s List honoree, Edmund J. James Scholar, and Chancellor’s Scholar, Jamie is a member of Phi Eta Sigma Honors Society and the Marching Illini.
Spencer Kiesewetter
Ralph Geeseman Scholarship for Veterans
After completing his Kinesiology degree next year, Spencer plans to continue his service as an officer in the US Army while pursuing a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree at Army-Baylor University. He volunteers at Carle Orthopedics and Sports Medicine and is an assistant in Dr. Steve Petruzzello’s Exercise Psychophysiology Lab.

Anna completes her Kinesiology degree in May and begins studies toward a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree this fall at Northwestern University. She was a research assistant in Dr. Ken Wilund’s Renal and Cardiovascular Disease Research Lab and Dr. Sean Mullen’s Exercise, Technology, and Cognition Lab. A Dean’s List honoree and Edmund J. James Scholar, Anna was a personal trainer at the Activities and Recreation Center.

Yanqing will pursue a career in medicine after completing her Kinesiology degree next year. She volunteers with the Division of Disability Resources and Educational Services, Illini Emergency Medical Services, and Carle Foundation Hospital’s Emergency Department. A Dean’s List honoree and Edmund J. James Scholar, Yanqing received the 2018 Joanne M. Carraway and Charles M. Carraway Scholarship.

Jasmin will study to be a physician assistant after graduating in May with her Kinesiology degree. She was an undergraduate research assistant in Dr. Jake Sosnoff’s Motor Control Research Lab and worked as a mobility technician and medical assistant at Carle Foundation Hospital. A Dean’s List honoree, Jasmin was an Access and Achievement Program Scholar.

Madelin will continue her studies toward a Physician Assistant degree after completing her Kinesiology degree in May. She helped physicians conduct physical examinations during medical mission trips to Nicaragua and Panama through Global Medical Training and volunteered in the outpatient surgery unit of Carle Foundation Hospital.

After completing her Community Health degree in May, Claudia will join Crowe LLP as a healthcare consultant. She volunteered and held internship positions with Promise Healthcare, Carle Foundation Hospital’s Contracts Management Department, Intelligent Medical Objects, and Crowe LLP. She was a Dean’s List honoree and Edmund J. James Scholar.

Brenda will complete her Community Health degree next year. She is a member of the Abriendo Caminos research team within the Family Resiliency Center and has participated in the Pritzker School of Medicine Experience in Research. A Dean’s List honoree, she has received a University of Illinois Latina/Latino Alumni Association Scholarship.

After graduating in May with a degree in Community Health, Sam will pursue a career in healthcare performance consulting. She was a research assistant with the Identifying Depression through Early Assessment (IDEA) team in the School of Social Work and served internships with WellCare Health Plans and Carle Foundation Hospital. A Dean’s List honoree, Sam also received the Carraway Scholarship in 2018.

Annabel will pursue master’s and doctoral degrees in Occupational Therapy after graduating in May with a degree in Kinesiology. She was an undergraduate research assistant in Dr. Jake Sosnoff’s Motor Control Research Lab and volunteered with the Clark-Lindsey retirement community. A Dean’s List honoree, she also received the 2018 Roger Winfield Morse Memorial Scholarship.

Daniel will pursue an academic career after completing his PhD in Kinesiology in December. He is a research assistant in Dr. Sean Mullen’s Exercise, Technology, and Cognition Lab, where he is investigating neuro-psychosocial outcomes following physical activity-based interventions among relatively healthy middle-aged adults. He served as a mentor in the Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program.

William H. Creswell Jr. Graduate Student Award
Libeth completes a Master of Public Health degree in May. She investigated maternal and child health and diabetes management as a research assistant in Dr. Sandraluz Lara-Cinisomo’s Laboratory for Emotion and Stress Assessment. She has worked as a health educator for Champaign County Health Care Consumers and OSF Heart of Mary Medical Center.
Darrien Rose

Roger Winfield Morse Memorial Scholarship
Darrien will enroll in the Accelerated Master of Science in Nursing program at St. Louis University after completing his Community Health degree in May. He was a research assistant in Dr. Ken Wilund’s Renal and Cardiovascular Disease Research Lab and a teaching assistant for a course on medical ethics. In 2017, he participated in the Centers for Disease Control’s Summer Public Health Scholars Program. He previously received the Jerry D. Burnam Scholarship.
Amadeo Salvador
Robert L. Sprague Graduate Student Award
Amadeo will complete his PhD in Kinesiology in 2021. He began his research career testing athletes to develop new ergogenic aids and training protocols. His doctoral studies focus on exercise and muscle response in hemodialysis patients. He currently is working with Dr. Nicholas Burd on a study of muscle metabolism in endurance athletes, resistance-trained athletes, and middle-aged adults.
Madelyn Smith
Kinesiology Scholarship Fund Award
After completing her Kinesiology degree in May, Mady will begin studies toward a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has been active on the AHS Student Council since her freshman year, serving this year as president. An Edmund J. James Scholar and Dean’s List honoree, Mady received a Career Development and Leadership Award and a YMCA Bailey Scholarship.
Emily Wells
MidAmerica Healthcare Executives Recognition Award
Emily graduates in May with a master’s degree in Health Administration. She will join the administrative team of Carle Foundation Hospital, where she served as a graduate intern. She also held positions with Health Alliance, OSF Heart of Mary Medical Center, and the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District. Emily was a teaching assistant for a course on health planning and an introductory statistics class.
Kortney Wilcher
F. Patricia Cullen Scholarship
Kortney plans to attend law school after completing her degree in Community Health next year. She currently works as a personal assistant to students registered with Beckwith Residential Support Services and has volunteered with the Buddy program, Special Olympics, and Champaign-Urbana Special Recreation.
Maris Wszalek

Maris will complete a degree in Community Health in 2022. She has volunteered with the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District and also worked with registered dietitians on campus to educate University of Illinois athletes about nutrition. She previously received a Vincent O. Greene Scholarship from St. Patrick Church in Urbana.
Hai Yan
Laura J. Huelster Award
Hai will complete both a PhD in Kinesiology and a master’s degree in Applied Statistics in 2020. Mentored by Dr. Weimo Zhu, her research focuses on promoting the fitness of children and youth and raising awareness of strategies to prevent health problems. She received a fellowship from the University of Illinois and a Love of Learning Award from the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.
